Middle Ridge sits between the popular Cow and Calf rocks and the more remote reaches of the moor, making it a cracking spot for families who want to feel they've achieved something without tackling a proper mountain.

The walk up from Ilkley town takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, following well-worn paths through heather and bracken. Kids will enjoy scrambling over the gritstone outcrops near the top, though the actual summit is more of a gentle dome than a dramatic peak. Views stretch across Wharfedale and on clear days you can make out the distant Yorkshire Dales.

Walkers get the most from this spot - it's free, accessible year-round, and connects nicely with longer routes across the moor. Allow two hours for the round trip from town, though you could easily spend longer exploring the surrounding area.
