Middle House Hill

The walk up Middle House Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind you why you haven't been to the gym since January. The summit sits at around 400 metres near Skipton, offering proper fell-walking without requiring a full day's commitment or technical gear. From the top, the Wharfe Valley spreads out below in that particular shade of green that only Yorkshire does well, with the hills rolling away toward the Three Peaks.

This is walker territory, full stop. The climb takes maybe 45 minutes at a steady pace, and the paths are well-trodden without being too busy. Families with older children will manage it fine; younger kids might find the constant gradient a bit much. The views reward the effort, though they're not of the jaw-dropping variety - more the kind that make you glad you came rather than the kind that end up on postcards.

Timing matters. Early morning gets you there before the weekend crowds, and autumn when the light's golden is when this landscape really sings. There's nothing at the summit itself - no café, no shelter - so bring what you need.

If you're based at Wood Nook Caravan Park or Wharfedale just outside Skipton, this makes a solid morning outing before lunch. It pairs well with exploring Skipton itself or heading toward the Yorkshire Dales. Not a "must-do", but a proper little hill with genuine appeal if you're already in the area.
