Wheelwright Hill

The walk up Wheelwright Hill from Skipton isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn your views. You're looking at moorland that rolls on for miles once you reach the top - proper Yorkshire Dales scenery, the kind that makes you understand why people come back here year after year.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. The path is well-trodden and manageable for most fitness levels, though the final push is genuine work. Allow a couple of hours return trip from the car park, more if you want to sit about and soak it in.

Families with older kids will do fine here. Younger ones might struggle with the gradient, and there's nothing at the summit itself - no cafe, no shelter, just the view and the wind. That's rather the point though. If you're after an easy stroll with stops and activities, this isn't it.

The real value is as part of a wider Dales trip. Pair it with Thornton Hall Country Park or the glamping spots at Malham (4.4 miles away) for a proper weekend. The area around Skipton has enough limestone walking to keep you occupied for days. Wheelwright Hill works best as a half-day outing rather than a destination in itself - get up there, breathe the air, then head back for lunch.

Best in clear weather. On a cloudy day, you're paying for the effort without the reward.
