South Field Hill

The walk up South Field Hill rewards you with proper Pennine views - moorland stretching out in all directions, with Skipton's market town sprawl visible to the south if the light's right. It's a short, sharp climb that takes maybe forty minutes from the base, which means families with younger legs might find it a bit much, but walkers after a proper peak bagging session will be content enough.

What you're getting here is honest fell walking without the crowds of the Lake District peaks. No facilities at the top, no gift shop, just windswept moorland and the kind of views that remind you why people bother with these things. The terrain's straightforward underfoot once you're on the path - not treacherous - though it can get boggy if the weather's been poor.

Historians might take interest in the old moorland boundaries and stone walls that crisscross the landscape, though South Field Hill itself is more about the walking than any particular landmark. It sits well within reach of the Yorkshire Dales, so if you're based at one of the glamping pods nearby - Malham's closest at 3.8 miles - you could easily make this part of a longer day that includes Malham Cove or a wander round Skipton itself.

Best visited in drier months, frankly. The boggy patches aren't life-threatening but they're not pleasant either. An hour and a half allows you plenty of time for the climb and a sit-down at the top with a thermos. Free, obviously - it's a fell.
