Meltham Mills Reservoir isn't dramatic or imposing - it's properly understated, which is exactly why it works. The walk around the perimeter takes about an hour if you're not dawdling, though most people are.

You get moorland views across the water and a real sense of being away from it all without needing to drive hours into the hills. The path is well-maintained and mostly level, making it manageable for families with younger kids, though the bit around the eastern end gets boggy after rain. Bring proper boots.

There's not much in the way of facilities - no cafe, no visitor centre, no gift shop. It's refreshingly basic. The appeal is pure and simple: water, sky, space to think. Early morning is best if you want to avoid the crowd of regulars and dog walkers who know this place intimately.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Whitegate Leisure or Thurlmoor Farm, this makes an excellent half-day outing, particularly if you're combining it with the higher moorland walks that branch off from the southern shore. The reservoir itself won't hold you for a full day unless you're the contemplative sort, but as part of a broader walking holiday in the area, it's well worth the detour.
