Melandra Castle

Roman forts don't usually announce themselves with much fanfare, and Melandra Castle is no exception. This second-century AD auxiliary fort sits on a hillside above Greenfield in Lancashire, commanding views across the moorland - though honestly, you'd walk straight past it if you didn't know what you were looking at. What remains are earthwork ramparts and the faint outline of ditches, visible if you squint a bit and use your imagination. On the ground it's fairly modest, but stand there for five minutes and you start to feel the weight of it - soldiers standing watch, the smell of the forge, the sound of Latin being barked across the parade ground.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the kind of place that rewards a longer stay than a quick snap for Instagram. The approach itself is decent - you're climbing into proper moorland territory, and the surrounding landscape tells the story as much as the fort itself. Allow a good hour if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology, less if you're just ticking boxes. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no interpretation board that does much more than explain what it was. Bring an OS map and download some background reading beforehand.

If you're camping at Dovestone Holiday Park down the road, it's absolutely worth the walk up. Pairs well with exploring the surrounding moorland and the valleys around Greenfield - this isn't a standalone trip, it's a piece of a bigger walking day. History buffs will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might find it a bit abstract without some groundwork first.
