Meggrim's Knowe

The walk up Meggrim's Knowe isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. From Wooler, it's a proper straightforward hike - nothing technical, just relentless gradient that'll have your legs telling you they're aware of the climb by halfway up.

What you get at the top makes it worth the huffing and puffing. The Cheviot Hills roll out in every direction, and on a clear day you can see for miles across Northumberland. The summit itself is unremarkable - a small cairn, a bit windswept - but that's not really the point. This is a walker's hill, the kind of place where you catch your breath, sit for twenty minutes, and remember why you bothered getting out of bed.

It's best done from spring through early autumn when the weather's more predictable. Allow two to three hours for a steady pace with a break at the top. The moorland can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional.

It's not the highest or most dramatic peak in the range - that distinction belongs to The Cheviot itself - but it's accessible and genuinely rewarding.
