Meanwood Park

The walk down into Meanwood Park catches you off guard. You're barely a couple of miles north of Leeds city centre, yet suddenly you're in a proper wooded valley with the beck running below and the noise of the city distant enough to forget about. This is a working nature reserve, not a manicured park, which means it feels lived-in - worn paths, fallen logs, real woodland rather than landscaped gardens.

You can spend anything from forty minutes to a full afternoon here depending on which trails you fancy. The main path follows Meanwood Beck, and there are woodland routes that loop back up through the trees. It's flat enough for pushchairs along the beck-side section, though the ground gets muddy after rain. Birdwatchers come here regularly - the reserve's been managed for wildlife for decades - and you'll spot herons if you're quiet near the water.

It's brilliant for families who want green space without the formality of a traditional park, and walkers heading out from Leeds will appreciate the quick escape into something that actually feels like countryside. The nearest caravan parks - St Helena's is closest at under four miles, with Fairmead Farm Glamping and Glenfield just beyond - are well positioned if you want to base yourself here for a night or two and explore the wider Wharfe Valley.

Free to access, no set hours that I'm aware of. Best in autumn when the light's good through the trees, though spring brings out the birds. Don't expect facilities - bring a packed lunch if you're staying long.
