Burgodonum

The Romans left their mark all over Britain, but Burgodonum near Leeds is one of those sites that makes you actually stand still and think about it. This was a proper military fort - garrison, bathhouse, granaries, the lot - built to control traffic along what's now the A1(M). You're standing on ground where legionaries marched around AD 71, which does something to your head.

History enthusiasts will get far more out of this than families with young kids looking for instant gratification. You need imagination and patience. Walkers heading out from Leeds might incorporate it into a longer route, though there's not masses to keep you here for hours. The nearest caravan parks like St Helena's and Fairmead Farm Glamping are within easy striking distance if you're basing yourself in West Yorkshire.
