Black Hill

At 1,475 feet, this modest summit near Leeds offers a proper Yorkshire ramble without the crowds you'll find on more famous peaks. The climb from the car park takes about 45 minutes through typical moorland terrain - not particularly challenging, but enough to earn your views. From the top, you'll get decent panoramas across the Leeds metropolitan area and the surrounding West Yorkshire countryside, though on a grey day it's all a bit industrial for my taste. The summit itself is marked by a trig point and feels genuinely remote despite being so close to the city. Walkers and local dog owners make up most of the traffic here, plus the occasional fell runner using it for training. It's free to access, naturally, and you could easily combine it with lunch in nearby Otley or Ilkley if you're making a day of it. Families with older kids who can manage a decent uphill slog will find it rewarding enough, though younger ones might get bored with the fairly monotonous terrain. Those staying at any of the nearby caravan parks like St Helena's or Fairmead Farm Glamping will appreciate having a proper hill walk on their doorstep. Best avoided in poor weather when the moorland paths turn into ankle-deep bogs.
