Horsforth Hall Park

Just north of Leeds, Horsforth Hall Park is a proper woodland reserve that feels a world away from the city buzz. You'll spot common woodland birds here - nothing rare enough to get the binoculars brigade going mad, but enough to make a morning walk worthwhile.

It's best suited to families wanting a gentle stroll and dog walkers who need somewhere local and reliable. History types might get a kick out of the old hall buildings on the site, though they're not open to the public. Realistically, allow 45 minutes to an hour to do the full circuit without dawdling.

Admission is free, which is the main reason it gets busy on weekends. Go mid-week or early morning if you want something closer to solitude. The paths are well-maintained but can get muddy after rain - proper walking boots aren't essential, but they'll save your trainers.
