Meall Uaine

The walk up Meall Uaine from Pitlochry is one of those Scottish climbs that doesn't look like much on the map until you're actually doing it. Rising to 2,139 metres, it's a proper hill rather than a casual stroll, but the reward is genuine - views across Perthshire that stretch for miles on a clear day.

You'll start from near Pitlochry and climb steadily through moorland and rough grassland. The path is well-trodden enough but never feels overcrowded. Budget three to four hours for the round trip if you're a regular hill walker; longer if you're building fitness or taking it slowly with younger legs. It's free to do, of course - these Scottish hills don't charge.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted round Pitlochry. Faskally Woods is barely over a mile away, making it dead convenient for a morning or afternoon outing. Milton Of Fonab is only a bit further. The walk suits families who have older kids comfortable on rougher terrain, and serious hikers looking for something substantial without epic commitment.

Go midweek if possible - weekends bring crowds from Perth and Edinburgh. Weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast and bring waterproofs even if it looks fine at the start. On a good day, this is genuinely rewarding.
