Maud Loch

The walk around Maud Loch takes you through proper Highland scenery without the crowds you'll find at Loch Tummel or Loch Rannoch just nearby. It's a modest body of water ringed by conifers and open moorland - the sort of place that rewards a gentle two-hour circuit more than it rewards Instagram aesthetics.

The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, making it decent for families with kids who can manage a steady pace, though there's not much of a destination at the end beyond the walk itself. Views open up as you round the eastern side, particularly back towards the Perthshire hills. On a clear day you get genuine Highland air - the kind that makes you feel like you've actually left somewhere.

This works well as a half-day outing if you're based at Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park or Tighnavon Glamping Pods, both within striking distance. It's the sort of walk you do when you want some movement but can't be bothered with the full day commitment of Ben Vrackie or a proper mountain expedition. Pitlochry's just 4-5 miles south if you need supplies or a decent lunch afterwards.

Go early on a weekday if you want solitude. The water itself is unremarkable - don't expect dramatic reflections or rare wildlife. But the walk itself, particularly in autumn when the light gets low and golden, is genuinely nice. It's not a destination, but it's a good reason to get out of the holiday park.
