Rising 660 metres above the Tummel Valley, this grassy dome delivers proper Highland views without the usual Highland slog. The walk from the A9 near Pitlochry takes about two hours each way - a steady climb through mixed woodland before emerging onto open hillside.

Families with teenagers will find this one manageable, though it's probably too much for little ones. The path is well-defined but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. What makes it special is the panorama from the top - Loch Tummel stretches out below, with Ben Lawers and the Tarmachan Ridge forming an impressive backdrop to the north.

It's free, obviously, and best tackled on a clear day when you can actually see something from the summit. Spring and autumn offer the best walking conditions, though summer brings the midges.

Blair Castle Caravan Park and River Tilt Park are also well-positioned for a morning assault on the peak.
