Victorian railway builders knew a good spot when they saw one. This highland town sits in a natural amphitheatre where the River Tummel meets the mountains, surrounded by forest-clad hills that blaze orange and gold come autumn. The railway still brings visitors today, though most come for the walking rather than the onward journey.

Mountain baggers have plenty to tackle here. Meall Reamhar and An Tulach offer proper Highland peaks without the crowds you'll find further north, while Dubh Chnocan provides cracking views down the valley. Closer to town, the Foss Loop walk takes you through dense woodland to a thundering waterfall - well worth the trek on a hot day.

Frenich Wood spreads across the hillsides like a green carpet, crisscrossed with paths that lead to hidden lochs. Lochan na Càrr sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the peaks above. It's the sort of place you stumble across and wonder why more people don't know about it.

Down by Tummel Bridge, the river runs fast and clear between granite boulders. The Braes of Foss nearby hold the remains of an ancient dun site, though you'll need to know what you're looking for to spot it among the bracken.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A9 brings you north from Perth in under an hour, though the single-track roads into the hills require a bit more patience. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the thick of it, with mountain walks starting from your tent flap and the town's pubs a pleasant evening stroll away.
