An Tulach

The walk up An Tulach starts in Pitlochry and climbs steadily through mixed woodland before breaking out onto open moorland - it's a proper little hill rather than a mountain, but the views across the Tummel Valley make it well worth the leg work. From the summit you're looking down at Loch Tummel and across to the bigger peaks beyond. On a clear day it's genuinely fine. The whole thing takes about two hours return, give or take, depending on your fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

It's the sort of walk that works best for people who want something engaging without needing ropes and serious experience. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland section a bit tedious. History types won't get much here - this is about the landscape, not the heritage. The path is reasonably clear, but check conditions before you go in winter as it can get boggy.

Since you're staying in the area - Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley is barely three miles away - this makes a solid half-day outing. Combine it with Pitlochry itself, which has enough going on to fill another day between the theatre, the dam, and the shops. River Tilt Park and Blair Castle Caravan Park are close by too if you're based at either of those. Admission's free, obviously. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midges in summer.
