Matts Hill

The walk up Matts Hill rewards you with proper views across the Medway Valley - nothing dramatic, but on a clear day you can see right across the Kent Weald. It's a modest peak by any standard, but that's rather the point. From Maidstone, it's an easy reach, and the climb itself takes about twenty minutes without breaking a sweat.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a non-event once they've reached the top - there's no café, no playground, no interpretive board telling you what you're looking at. But that's precisely why serious walkers like it. You get silence, space, and a genuine sense of having gone somewhere without needing a full day's expedition.

The summit itself is fairly bare, so timing matters. Early morning gives you the best light and solitude; weekends can get busier. Allow an hour there and back from the nearest car park, including time to stand around getting your breath back and actually looking at the view.

Kits Coty Glamping and Bearsted Caravan Club are both within easy striking distance too. It pairs well with exploring the surrounding area's walking routes - not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Kent break where you're after proper countryside without the crowds.
