Marley Knowe round cairn

You'll find Marley Knowe sitting on open moorland above Wooler, a Bronze Age round cairn that's been watching over the Cheviot landscape for roughly 4,000 years. It's essentially a hefty pile of stones arranged in a circle - the kind of thing that stops you mid-walk and makes you think about who went to the effort of hauling rocks up here and why. The cairn itself is about 20 metres across, which sounds modest until you're actually standing beside it and realizing the sheer labour involved.

This one's for walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than kids hoping for interactive exhibits or refreshment facilities. There are none. Neither park is far enough away to make this a chore, and Wooler itself provides shops and pubs for afterwards. The real appeal here is the quietness and the age of the thing. You won't find crowds or tourism infrastructure, just wind, stone, and several millennia of human intention.
