Margery Hill

The walk up Margery Hill is a proper no-fuss climb from Sheffield that rewards you with views across the Peak District. Nothing fancy - just moorland, sky, and the kind of vista that makes you understand why people bother with all that walking gear.

You're looking at a straightforward push to the summit, the kind of thing that takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and where you start. The hill itself sits above the city, so the contrast between Sheffield's sprawl below and the open moorland around you is quite stark. On a clear day you can see for miles - on a grey one (and there will be grey ones) it's moody and atmospheric instead.

This is solid territory for walkers wanting something achievable without needing a map and compass. Families with older kids will manage it fine; toddlers in buggies won't. The moorland terrain can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional.

If you're staying at one of the local campsites - Hoodlands Farm, Thurlmoor Farm or The Holiday Pod are all within five miles - this makes a natural half-day outing. It's the kind of walk that leaves you satisfied rather than exhausted, freeing up the afternoon for exploring the Peak District properly or heading back to your pitch for a brew.

Go early morning if you want decent light and fewer people. The moorland changes completely with the seasons, so it's worth returning.
