High Stones

The walk up to High Stones from Sheffield takes you proper into the Peak District's wilder side. It's a modest summit by most standards, but the moorland approach is what makes it worth the effort - open, windswept, and honest. Once you're up there, the view across South Yorkshire spreads out in a way that feels earned rather than handed to you.

The stones themselves are the draw. They're gritstone outcrops that break through the heather, weathered and genuine, nothing dressed up for the tourists. You get good long views across the moors in most directions, and on a clear day the perspective shift from Sheffield's urban edge to this raw landscape is striking. It's not a climb that demands specialist gear, but it does demand proper boots and respect for the weather - the moor can turn grey and clammy faster than you'd expect.

Walkers will appreciate it most. This isn't a quick tick-box peak; it's part of a proper moorland circuit if you want it to be. Families with keen legs might manage it, though younger kids will find the windswept summit bit underwhelming after the effort. History types will find the gritstone geology interesting, but there's no ancient monument business here.

Allow 2-3 hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how you approach it. Several of the local campsites - Hoodlands Farm Campsite and Thurlmoor Farm are closest at under 6 miles away - offer a good base for tackling this and other Peak District walks. Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring the crowds, and the moor's too wild for that.
