Margate Caves

The chalk caves carved into the cliffs above Margate's seafront are properly atmospheric - all damp stone and history seeping from the walls. You're standing in tunnels that locals have been mucking about in since medieval times, though exactly who dug them and why remains delightfully mysterious. Some reckon smugglers used them, others swear they're medieval quarries. The truth is lost to time, which somehow makes them better.

Walking through feels like stepping into a cross-section of the town's past. The caves aren't exactly vast - you're not descending into some cathedral of rock - but they've got character. Low ceilings, winding passages, and that specific smell of old chalk and sea air that you don't forget. It's the kind of place where kids get genuinely spooked for exactly the right reasons, though bring a torch because it gets properly dark.

Set aside maybe 45 minutes including the walk down from the clifftop. Access can be a bit fiddly depending on what's open to the public at any given time, so check ahead before making the trip from Birchington. It pairs well with a wider Margate wander - the town has proper character these days, especially around the old harbour.
