Manston Park

Manston Park is a proper working nature reserve just outside Birchington on the Isle of Thanet, built on the grounds of a former RAF airfield. What you get here is flat, open grassland dotted with wildflower meadows, shallow pools, and scattered woodland - the kind of place where you can actually spot things rather than squinting through binoculars at distant shapes.

Birdwatchers will have a field day, especially during migration seasons. The reserve attracts waders, terns, and all manner of passage migrants that stop over before continuing south. If you're into dragonflies and insects, the wetland areas are excellent. Walk around and you'll find viewing screens positioned at sensible spots - nothing fancy, but they work.

It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes for a quick loop to three hours if you're serious about the birdwatching. Early morning is when you'll see the most activity. The terrain is dead easy - mostly flat with well-trodden paths, so it suits families with younger kids and anyone not keen on steep hillsides.

Staying at Birchington Vale or The Foxhunter Park nearby, this makes a solid morning visit before heading to the beach at Birchington. It's not going to blow your mind - the landscape is gentle rather than dramatic - but if you want a low-key nature spot without crowds, it delivers. Worth a detour if you're in the area, though don't expect much in the way of facilities.
