Mansell Hill

The walk up Mansell Hill from Clitheroe is one of those proper rewarding climbs that doesn't take all day. You're looking at maybe an hour to the summit depending on fitness, and the effort pays off with views across the Ribble Valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. From the top you can see right across Lancashire's moorland - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people bother with these peaks at all.

It's a straightforward ascent, well-trodden enough that you won't get lost but not so busy that it feels like a theme park. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the final push a bit of a slog. The paths are decent underfoot in most weather, though after rain it can get muddy and slippery in places.

Do it in late afternoon if you can. The light changes everything, and you'll have the hillside mostly to yourself once the day-trippers from Clitheroe head home. There's no charge to walk it - just park sensibly in the town and head out. It's the sort of thing that takes a couple of hours from start to finish, making it ideal if you're based at one of the local holiday parks like Holgates Ribble Valley or Parkdean Resorts Todber Valley. Mansell Hill works perfectly as a morning or evening sortie while you're staying nearby, not a full-day expedition. Worth doing once if you're in the area.
