Manningtree Museum

The museum occupies a modest corner of Manningtree itself, a market town that's seen better days but still holds genuine appeal for anyone interested in Essex's past. Inside, you'll find the expected local history fare - objects from the town's wool trade, bits of pottery, old maps - but what makes it worth an hour of your time is the focus on Manningtree's darker chapters, particularly the witch trials of the 1640s. Matthew Hopkins, the so-called Witchfinder General, operated from here, and the museum doesn't shy away from that grim legacy.

The space is compact, which means you won't feel exhausted by the end. Families with history-mad teenagers will get something out of it; younger children might find it a bit dry unless you're keen on ramming local stories down their throats. The town itself is walkable and the museum plugs neatly into a morning exploring Manningtree's Georgian high street and riverside, which still has decent bones despite the decline.
