Manningtree Beach

The Stour estuary at Manningtree is one of those places that creeps up on you. What looks like a modest stretch of waterfront from the high street actually opens into proper tidal marshland, with mudflats that shift depending on whether you've caught high or low water. The beach itself is shingle and mud rather than golden sand - this is working Essex coastline, not a bucket-and-spade destination.

Walkers get the most from it. The paths along the estuary rim give you good views across to Mistley's industrial heritage on the opposite bank, and it's the sort of spot where you might actually spot wildlife rather than just postcards of it. Bring binoculars. The walk takes an hour or so depending on how far you wander, and it's flat enough for families, though small children will get muddy. No facilities to speak of - bring your own coffee.

You won't find opening hours because this isn't a ticketed attraction. It's free, always accessible, and quietly appeals to people who prefer their seaside without the amusement arcades. If you're staying at Strangers Holiday Park just up the road, or any of the caravan sites dotted around Ardleigh and Suffolk, this is a solid morning out. Best visited at low tide when you get the full span of the mudflats. High tide compresses everything, makes it feel hemmed in.

Manningtree itself is a proper working town - has a railway station, decent pubs - so you're not marooned if the estuary walk doesn't fill your day.
