Mallerdale Hill

The walk up Mallerdale Hill from Clitheroe is properly straightforward - nothing that'll have you cursing your trainers. It's one of those Lancashire peaks that doesn't demand mountaineering skills, just a decent hour of your afternoon and some reasonable legs.

What you get at the top is a proper sweep of the Ribble Valley. On a clear day, Pendle Hill sits across the landscape like something from a painting, and the valley floor spreads out in greens and browns below. It's the sort of view that makes the climb feel worth it, even if the summit itself is just a trig point and open moorland rather than some dramatic rocky outcrop.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. It's not a slog for families with young kids, but older ones who can manage an hour's steady climbing will find it rewarding. History buffs might be less gripped - there's no castle or ruin waiting at the top, just landscape. The grassland can get boggy in wet weather, so pick your season.

It's free to access and costs nothing but time. Allow a couple of hours return from Clitheroe's edge. If you're based at Holgates Ribble Valley or Thornton Hall Country Park nearby, this works as a bracing half-day activity. It pairs well with exploring Clitheroe itself, or pushing on to bigger walks in the Forest of Bowland. Not dramatic, but solid.
