Malham Tarn

The walk up to Malham Tarn is one of those Yorkshire outings that justifies the effort. You're after a proper upland lake - moorland on all sides, no cafes, no gift shop, just water and sky and the occasional fell walker looking properly windswept. The tarn itself sits at around 370 metres, so it's a genuine climb from the village below, but the path is well-trodden and takes roughly an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath.

What you get up there is genuinely worth the legwork. The lake is fed by underground springs and surrounded by moorland that shifts colour with the seasons - golden gorse in summer, browns and purples come autumn. On a clear day you can see proper distance. The water's cold enough that swimming isn't really the point, though locals do it. Most people come for the walk itself, the views across the Pennines, and the simple fact that you've earned your feet up.

This is walker territory, really. Families with older kids will manage fine, but toddlers might struggle with the gradient. It's free, takes a couple of hours to do properly including the return, and works brilliantly as part of a wider Malham loop - you could tie it with the Cove or Janet's Foss if you're doing a full day out. Skipton's the nearest proper town for supplies and accommodation. The glamping pods at Malham itself are two miles away, making this an easy base for exploring the area without fighting traffic.
