About Malham Cove
Walking up from Malham itself takes about twenty minutes. You'll pass through the village - Skipton's the nearest town for supplies and petrol - and follow the stream past Janet's Foss waterfall before the path steepens. The cove reveals itself gradually, then all at once, and the scale is genuinely vertiginous. Climbers use it; walkers use it as a turnaround point or press on across the top where the limestone pavement is slick and unforgiving.
For serious fell walkers this is part of the landscape, a waypoint on longer routes through the Dales. Families with decent fitness levels will find the walk manageable, though young kids might struggle with the gradient on the way back down. The real kick comes from scrambling onto the base of the cove itself - you can get close enough to feel the geological time in it, and on a clear day the views back down to Malham are sharp enough to photograph.
It's free, it's always open, and it doesn't take long if you're just doing the walk. Base yourself at Malham Glamping Pods just down the road, or Wood Nook Caravan Park, and you can squeeze this into a wider Dales exploration. Worth a morning, definitely worth the walk.
