Maiden Craig woods

The woods rise up sharply just outside Dumfries, and within five minutes of leaving the town you're properly immersed in beech and oak - it's a genuine escape rather than a manicured park. Maiden Craig is what Scottish woodland should be: dense, a bit wild, with paths that wind through older growth where the light filters through unevenly.

You'll find a network of walking trails of varying difficulty. The main paths are well-trodden and easy to follow, but there are steeper sections that'll test your legs if you fancy it. The views across Dumfries and toward the Solway are decent from the higher points, though you're navigating through trees for most of it so don't expect panoramic vistas. There's a car park at the base which makes access straightforward - no hunting about for trailheads.

It works best for walkers who want proper woodland rather than open moorland. Kids will manage the easier routes, though there's nothing specifically laid on for them beyond the walking itself. A couple of hours is a reasonable visit; longer if you're tackling all the paths systematically.

If you're staying at Landis Farm CL or Criffel View just over the road, this is ideal for getting out without driving - you could easily walk into the woods from the campsites themselves. It slots well into a wider Dumfries area trip alongside Caerlaverock Castle to the south. Free access, open year-round. Winter can be muddy, so plan accordingly.
