New Abbey Pow

The water at New Abbey Pow sits still and dark, reflecting whatever sky Scotland's decided to throw at it that day. It's a proper little lake just outside Dumfries, the sort of place locals know about but most visitors sail right past on their way to somewhere supposedly more important.

What you've actually got here is a straightforward walk around a modest body of water - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll make your jaw drop. But that's rather the point. It's the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think, where a heron might be working the shallows and the only company is whatever dog walkers have wandered over from nearby Dumfries. The walk itself takes maybe thirty to forty minutes at an easy pace, depending on which route you fancy and how often you stop to muck about with your phone camera.

Worth doing if you're already camped at one of the nearby sites - Landis Farm or Criffel View are within spitting distance - but don't make a special journey unless you're genuinely after a quiet, undemanding walk in the Dumfries & Galloway lowlands. It's free, obviously, and there's no faffing about with opening hours or admission fees. Go when the light's decent, which in winter means before three in the afternoon. The real value here is as a breather between bigger days out - a proper palate cleanser rather than the main event.
