The woodland walk through Brickhouse Wood is a straightforward affair - nothing fancy, just proper forest. You get mature trees, decent paths, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think, which is rare these days. It's the sort of place where you can knock out a solid hour's walk without breaking a sweat, or dawdle for two if you're the type who stops to examine moss.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable. The paths are generally well-trodden and not treacherous, though it can get muddy after rain - bring decent boots. Older children might find it a bit samey if you're expecting dramatic viewpoints or a playground, but if they're into spotting birds or collecting interesting sticks, they'll be content enough.

Combine it with a visit to Caerlaverock Castle, which is close by and actually worth your time. The wood won't blow your mind, but it'll do the job on a decent afternoon when you need to get outside.
