Lydney Park Spring Gardens

The Spring Gardens at Lydney Park are a proper tonic if you're after somewhere peaceful to stretch your legs without the crowds. It's a woodland garden that comes alive in spring - hence the name - with rhododendrons and azaleas doing their thing across sloping grounds that feel genuinely quiet, even when you've got company around.

You're walking through mature trees, past flowering shrubs, with paths that wind naturally through the landscape rather than feeling engineered. The whole setup takes about an hour if you're pottering about at a normal pace, though you can zip through in forty minutes if you're keen. There's a real sense of stepping away from the main Lydney drag, which sits just down the hill.

Historically minded visitors might find the Roman remains of the Lydney Temple interesting - the park grounds touch on this heritage - though don't expect major excavations or museum-quality interpretation. Families with young walkers will manage fine on the main paths, though prams could be tricky on steeper bits.

Worth timing your visit for April or May when the spring display is actually worth the drive. Summer and autumn, it's pleasant enough but not exceptional. The nearby Deanwood Holiday Cottages and the Forest and Wye Valley sites both sit within a few miles, making it an easy morning outing from your base.
