Woorgreens Lake Nature Reserve

The water here is the first thing that hits you - still and reflective, ringed by woodland that feels properly separated from the outside world. Woorgreens Lake sits just outside Lydney in Herefordshire, a freshwater reserve that's quietly doing what nature reserves do best: letting wildlife get on with things without much fuss or fanfare.

It's a walking destination more than a destination destination, if that makes sense. You're here for the paths around the water, the chance to spot waterfowl if you're patient, and the simple fact of being somewhere green and relatively quiet. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, no admission charge as far as anyone can tell - just a lake and the Forest of Dean pressing in around it.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those doing longer loops through the surrounding woodland. It's not a place to drag reluctant teenagers to, but families after a gentle hour-long circuit will find it restful. The nearest proper base is Lydney itself, though if you're camping in the area - Whitemead Forest Park and Bracelands Campsite are both within a few miles - you could easily slot this into a morning before heading elsewhere.

The real appeal is how undeveloped it remains. No signage screaming for attention, no Instagram viewpoint, no gift shop. If that sounds like your sort of morning, it's worth the detour. If you need structured activities and clear paths, look elsewhere.
