Wenchford Picnic Area

The Wenchford Picnic Area sits quietly in the Forest of Dean, a few miles outside Lydney - the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a working woodland spot, really, with picnic tables scattered among the trees and access to some decent walking trails that loop through the surrounding forest. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

This is walker territory, first and foremost. The paths are well-trodden and manageable, linking into the broader network of forest routes - good for families who want something straightforward, or for anyone after a proper woodland wander without the crowds of the more famous Forest of Dean attractions. The picnic setup means you can easily string together a morning walk with lunch in the trees, which beats eating in a café.

There's no visitor centre or anything like that, so come prepared with maps if you're doing longer routes. The area works best as part of a wider Forest of Dean exploration rather than a destination in itself - an hour or two maximum, unless you're planning a proper half-day walk. It's free, naturally, and open whenever suits you.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Whitemead Forest Park or Severn Valley are close enough - Wenchford makes a pleasant half-morning detour before heading elsewhere. Locals clearly use it regularly, which is usually a good sign. It's proper woodland stuff, honest and unfussy.
