Lower Ogden Reservoir

The water sits perfectly still most days, reflecting the Pennine slopes that rise up behind Nelson. Lower Ogden Reservoir is a proper working water body, not some manicured leisure destination, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots or caravan parks.

You can walk the full circuit in about an hour without pushing yourself, following the path that winds around the shoreline through moorland that's genuinely wild. In autumn especially, when the heather turns bronze and the water takes on that steel-grey quality, it feels like you've actually left Lancashire behind. The eastern side offers the best views back towards Pendle Hill.

This isn't somewhere to spend half a day. Come for the walk, the air, the absence of crowds. Birdwatchers do well here - you'll see grey herons and the occasional golden plover if you're quiet about it. Families with young kids might find it a bit bleak and featureless after twenty minutes, though older children who like proper fell walking will get something from it.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's minimal infrastructure - no café, no visitor centre, just water and sky. The nearest town, Nelson, has the expected high street facilities if you need a coffee before or after.
