Lower Heath Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Hereford, Lower Heath Wood offers the sort of quiet forest trails you'd expect from rural Herefordshire - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. The trees are mixed deciduous, the paths are well-worn and easy enough for families with younger kids, and there's real value in just wandering for an hour or two without having to pay an entrance fee or book a slot.

It's the kind of place walkers will appreciate more than sightseers. There's no visitor centre, no tea shop, no car park with disabled facilities - you park on the roadside and go in on foot. The woodland itself is fairly typical English forest: lots of greenery, decent bird life if you're quiet, and the sort of damp earth smell that comes with deciduous trees. In autumn the leaf colour is worth the detour; in summer it's pure shade and shelter.

For families based at one of the nearby campsites - Trippenkennett Farm, Tresseck, or Broadmeadow Caravan Park are all within a few miles - it's an easy morning activity before heading elsewhere. The walks aren't long enough to fill a full day for most people, but they're perfect for burning off restless energy and getting out of a holiday park when the weather's decent.

Allow an hour or two depending on how much you want to explore. Go midweek if you can - weekends draw the local dog-walkers and it loses some charm. There's no bad time of year, though spring and autumn are best.
