Cockshoot Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Cockshoot Wood sits just outside Hereford and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Herefordshire forest - dense trees, quiet paths, and the sort of peace you don't get near town. The wood is free to roam, no admission charge, though there's little in the way of facilities or formal infrastructure. Expect a straightforward network of trails through mixed woodland; nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you want an hour or so away from things.

Walkers will get the most from it, especially those staying at one of the nearby campsites like Trippenkennett Farm or Burhope Farm - both within easy driving distance. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited after the first half-hour; there's no playground, no visitor centre, no obvious highlights to tick off. But for anyone on a proper walking holiday in the area, it's a solid addition to a day's rambling.

Go early morning if you can - the wood's all the better for being quiet. Allow 60-90 minutes for a decent circuit without rushing. Spring and autumn are best; summer gets thick with foliage and can feel a bit claustrophobic, winter muddy underfoot. There's limited parking, so arrive prepared rather than expecting creature comforts. It's not Symonds Yat or the Forest of Dean, but it's also not trying to be. Honest woodland, near Hereford, free, and worth the detour if you're camping locally.
