Lower Fitz Park

The River Greta cuts through Lower Fitz Park like a ribbon of grey-green water, and that's really what you're coming for - a proper walk along the riverbank just outside Keswick. It's a nature reserve, so the undergrowth is left to do its thing, and you'll spot the usual Lake District cast: sessile oak, alder, the occasional dipper if you're patient. The path itself is straightforward, following the river for a decent stretch without much faffing about with stiles or boggy bits.

This works best for walkers who want something gentle without the fell-trudging commitment. Families with junior legs won't get bored because there's water to look at the whole way, and kids can hunt for salamanders and identify birds. History types get less here - it's nature pure and simple, no ruins or plaques. Allow an hour or so, maybe longer if you're taking binoculars.

It's free and accessible most of the time, being a proper reserve. Timing matters though - spring for the wild garlic and birds nesting, autumn for the colour. Winter can be muddy. Summer's fine if you're not bothered by flies.

If you're based at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, barely a ten-minute walk away, this is ideal for a morning outing before heading into Keswick proper. Castlerigg Hall and Threlkeld Hall are also within striking distance if you fancy a longer day combining this with Castlerigg Stone Circle or a proper Lake District walk. It's not spectacular - won't set your Instagram ablaze - but it's solid, local nature done right.
