Lover's Leap

From this limestone outcrop above the Manifold Valley, you can see for miles across the undulating Derbyshire countryside. The name sounds romantic, but the reality is a proper scramble up through woodland to reach the rocky promontory - definitely wear decent walking boots.

Families with young children might find the walk a bit challenging, particularly the final approach which involves clambering over some loose stones. But keen walkers and photography enthusiasts will love it. The vista stretches across to Thorpe Cloud and the White Peak hills, with the River Manifold winding below like a silver thread.

Timing matters here. Early morning light is lovely, but late afternoon when the sun catches the valley walls creates the most dramatic shots. Allow about 45 minutes for the round trip from the nearest parking spot in Ashbourne, though you could easily spend longer up top soaking up the views.

It's free to visit, which makes it excellent value for a quick detour. The path can be muddy after rain, so check conditions if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Ashbourne Heights or Callow Top. Worth combining with a walk through nearby Dovedale for a proper Peak District day out, though this spot feels wilder and less crowded than its famous neighbour.
