Thorpe Cloud

Standing at 942 feet above the River Dove, this limestone hill marks the southern gateway to the Peak District proper. The climb from the car park near Thorpe village takes about 30 minutes of steady effort, winding up through grassy slopes that get increasingly steep as you approach the summit cairn.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the final rocky section. The reward is a cracking 360-degree view that stretches across the Dove Valley to Bunster Hill opposite, with Dovedale's famous stepping stones visible far below if you know where to look.

What makes Thorpe Cloud special is its accessibility - you get proper Peak District drama without the full hiking commitment. Most people allow two hours return, including time at the top for photos and a breather. The path can be muddy after rain, so decent walking boots are essential rather than trainers.

Walkers often combine it with a stroll through Dovedale itself, making for a lovely half-day out from Ashbourne. The hill draws serious fell runners training for longer routes, but don't let that put you off - it's well within reach of anyone with moderate fitness. Just don't expect solitude on sunny weekends when the car park fills up by mid-morning.
