Bunster Hill

Standing at 408 metres, this limestone peak rewards walkers with cracking views across Dovedale and the White Peak. The climb from Ilam village is proper steep but well worth the effort - you'll see why it's called one of Derbyshire's finest viewpoints once you reach the top.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from Bunster Hill. The route up follows well-worn paths through woodland before emerging onto open grassland near the summit. Families with older children who don't mind a decent hike will love it, though the ascent might be too challenging for little ones.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Ilam, including time to catch your breath and snap photos at the top. Early morning visits offer the best light and fewer crowds, especially during summer months when the car parks near Dovedale fill up quickly.

From nearby holiday parks like Ashbourne Heights or Callow Top, it's an easy drive to the Ilam area. The hill sits perfectly for combining with other Peak District walks - Thorpe Cloud is visible from the summit and makes for excellent peak-bagging if you're feeling energetic. Just outside Ashbourne, you're well-placed for exploring both the gentler White Peak landscapes and the more dramatic walking further north.
