Musden Low

Standing at just 339 metres, Musden Low won't test your stamina but delivers surprisingly good views across the Derbyshire countryside. This modest hill sits about three miles northwest of Ashbourne, making it an easy target for families staying at the surrounding holiday parks.

The walk up is gentle enough for children - no scrambling required - and the rounded summit gives you a proper sense of the Peak District's rolling landscape spreading out below. On a clear day, you can pick out the higher peaks to the north and trace the valleys that cut through this part of Derbyshire.

It's the sort of hill that gets overlooked by serious walkers heading for bigger targets, which works in your favour. You'll often have the top to yourself, especially on weekday mornings. The whole expedition takes about an hour from the nearest parking spot, including time to catch your breath and take in the view.

Families based at nearby sites like Callow Top Holiday Park or Ashbourne Heights will find this a cracking little adventure that doesn't eat up half the day. Pack a flask and some biscuits - the summit's wide enough for an impromptu picnic. Just don't expect dramatic rocky outcrops or waterfalls. This is gentle Derbyshire at its most understated.
