Lousy Hillock

You won't find Lousy Hillock on many tourist maps, which is precisely why it's worth the bother. This modest peak sits above Rossendale in Lancashire, offering proper fell walking without the crowds you'd encounter on the better-known summits nearby. The climb isn't steep - more of a steady walk than a leg-burner - and from the top you get decent views across the valley and moorland rolling out in all directions.

It's the sort of place walkers love because there's no faffing about with visitor centres or entrance fees. You park up, put your boots on, and go. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. The terrain is fairly rough underfoot, so proper walking shoes matter.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a bit unrewarding - there's no cafe at the top or anything theatrical to break up the walk. This is real Pennine moorland, brown and heathery and honest. It works perfectly as part of a wider exploration of the area.
