Lord's Seat

The walk up Lord's Seat rewards you with proper views across the Hope Valley - on a clear day you can pick out the limestone cliffs and moorland rolling away towards Mam Tor. It's not a savage climb, more of a steady trudge from Hope that takes the best part of an hour if you're not rushing, and the peak itself is modest enough that you won't feel cheated when you get there.

This is walking territory rather than a destination you'd drive to and wander round for five minutes. The appeal is in the approach through proper Derbyshire countryside, not some constructed viewpoint. Families with decent legs will manage it fine - the path is clear and there's nothing technical about it. You'd want to allow a good two hours round trip if you're stopping for breath and photos.

The view justifies the effort without being dramatic. You're looking at the bones of the Peak District here - the geology and the farming landscape that makes the area work. Go early if possible; the path gets busy at weekends and you want the light right for photos.

If you're camping at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 2.7 miles away, or Laneside a touch further out, Lord's Seat makes a proper morning walk without eating the whole day. It pairs well with exploring Castleton itself - the caves and the village are genuinely worth an afternoon. Derbyshire Hills Campsite sits further back but gives you access to the broader walking network in the area.
