Lord Dufferin Monument

A Victorian tower rising from Castlereagh Hills, just south of Belfast - that's what you're getting with the Lord Dufferin Monument. It's a proper stunner on the skyline, built to honour the 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, a 19th-century diplomat and administrator. Most people come for the walk up through the parkland and the views back across Belfast rather than spending hours studying the monument itself.

The climb takes about twenty minutes at a steady pace. Once you're up there, you can see right across the city to the loughs beyond - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the trip. Families with older kids will manage the walk fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog, though the grounds are decent for letting them run about before heading back down.

Free to visit, and it's the sort of spot that doesn't demand more than an hour of your time unless you're into the full historical deep-dive on Victorian colonial history. The monument itself is less interesting than the journey and the vantage point, to be honest. Worth combining with a caravan stay at Dundonald Touring Caravan Park or the glamping spots at The Pods at Streamvale, both very close by. You're basically on the doorstep of Belfast, so you could slot this in before heading into the city proper, or use it as a breathing space between urban exploring. Go when the weather's decent - wind and rain kill the experience flat.
