Longside Wood

The walk into Longside Wood from Keswick is one of those proper Lake District experiences that doesn't require a famous name or a queue. It's a dark, quiet forest of tall conifers and older broadleaves - the sort of place where the light gets thick and green even on a bright day. You'll find it a few miles south of town, and once you're in among the trees, you forget how close you are to the bustle.

It's genuinely good for walkers who want something less exposed than the fells but more interesting than a park stroll. The paths aren't signposted to death, which keeps it from feeling corporate, though they're manageable enough.
