Lodore Wood

The walk into Lodore Wood from Keswick is what makes this place rather special. You drop down through proper old-growth forest, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, and the trees are big enough to make you feel small. The woodland floor is thick with moss and fallen branches, and light filters through in that particular way that makes photographers lose their minds.

It's not a destination in itself, but rather a cracking spot to add to a wider walk around the Lakes. The paths are manageable but muddy after rain - sensible boots are non-negotiable. You could spend anywhere from an hour pottering about to half a day if you're combining it with nearby Derwent Water walks. Families with younger kids will find it decent for an hour or so, though there's nothing particularly dramatic to hold their attention beyond the scrambling about on logs and splashing through streams.

The real value comes if you're already based at one of the nearby parks - Castlerigg Hall is just 2.4 miles away, which makes this a natural morning mission while the campsite is still waking up. It's free, as far as anyone can tell, and there's no barrier to access. The woods sit between Keswick and the broader Lakes network, so it slots in nicely with a day exploring Catbells or heading round to Borrowdale. Not a must-do on its own, but if you're camping nearby and want a quick woodland amble without the crowds, it'll do the job.
