Lochwood Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Moffat, Lochwood Wood delivers exactly what you'd want from a Scottish forest - decent paths, a bit of seclusion, and enough trees to feel properly away from things without needing to trek for hours. The wood sits alongside Lochwood Loch, which adds something beyond just walking between conifers. On a clear day you get decent views across the water, and the paths loop around nicely so you're not just trudging out and back again.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a scramble or anything technical - just straightforward forest walking with proper footing - but you do need to be prepared for muddy sections, especially after rain. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take it slowly and actually look at things rather than rushing through. The local deer don't seem bothered by visitors, which is always a bonus.

It's free to wander, and there's no entrance fee or booking needed. The real value here is that it pairs brilliantly with a base at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road. If you're staying there for a week, this makes an excellent mid-week outing when you fancy something low-key but rewarding. Early mornings are quieter, and the light through the trees is better for photography if that's your thing. Winter's atmospheric but muddy; spring and early summer are when the place really sings.
