Lochan Duin

You'll find Lochan Duin tucked away in the Argyll landscape, a small freshwater loch that rewards those willing to leave the main roads. The water sits calm most days, ringed by moorland and the kind of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong. It's the sort of place where you can spend an hour just standing still and feeling properly remote, even though Lochgilphead is only a short drive away.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a decent circuit round the loch itself - nothing strenuous, mostly firm ground - that takes you through some lovely open country. The views aren't dramatic in a Highland way, but they're real and uncluttered. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the loch attracts waders and the occasional osprey depending on season. Photography types will find the light across the water shifts beautifully through the day, especially late afternoon.

It's free to visit and you can basically stay as long as you fancy. An hour gives you the walk and a sit-down. Half a day works better if you're the contemplative sort. The closest proper caravan base is Lochgilphead Caravan Park, only 3.6 miles off, so it slots in nicely as a morning or evening excursion from your holiday pitch. The Pod Over By, if you're after something smaller and more upmarket, is barely further. This isn't a day-long destination - it's a proper recharge stop during a broader Argyll trip.
