Lochan Buic

The water at Lochan Buic sits still as glass on a windless day, and that's really the draw here - it's a proper wee pocket of calm about four miles from Lochgilphead. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or café, just a small highland loch surrounded by moorland that feels genuinely quiet in a way most Scottish lochs don't anymore.

It's the kind of place walkers stumble upon rather than plan for. The shoreline walk takes maybe 45 minutes if you're not in a rush, and the views back towards the hills are solid without being dramatic. In spring the water reflects the sky so cleanly you'd swear you're looking straight through to the other side. Bring binoculars - there's decent birdlife if you're patient, and the loch gets little enough footfall that you might actually see something worth photographing.

Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on attractions; there's no facilities and nowhere to buy an ice cream once you've walked round. But teenagers who like their landscapes moody and uncrowded will rate it. History enthusiasts won't find much - it's nature and air rather than stones and stories.

If you're based at Lochgilphead Caravan Park or The Pod Over By, this makes a decent morning sortie. Free, obviously, open year-round, and the walk beats another lap of the village. Go when the weather's clear though - mist rolls in fast and the whole place disappears.
